Species-Area Relation and Self-Similarity in a Biogeographical Model of Speciation and Extinction

چکیده

We introduce a generic model for the population growth and dispersal of individuals in species with heterogeneous, fluctuating environments. New species originate with a probability inversely proportional to the abundance of the parent species. The model generates an average number of species which depends on the domain area in agreement with the species-area relation for islands. The model also generates self-similar radiations characterized by a power-law distribution for the number of subtaxa with the same parent taxon and a 1yf power spectrum for the time series of extinctions and originations. Speciation of four heavy metals in agricultural soils around DraaLasfarmine area in Marrakech (Morocco)

This study was carried out to 1. determine spatial variations of heavy metal deposition in agricultural soils of two rural communities (OuledBouAicha and Tazakourte) of about 5790 ha in a mining area near Marrakech city in Morocco; 2. to assess the extent of metallic pollution generated by the mining activity and; 3. to identify the key mechanism responsible for this contamination and its relat...

Reconciliation ecology and the future of species diversity

Species-area relationships (SPARs) dictate a people reduce the area available to wild species, they impose a linear reduction of the earth’s species diversity sea change in the strategies of biodiversity conservation. SPARs exist at three ecological scales: Sample-area SPARs that will follow the largest of these scales, i.e. each 1% reduction of natural area will cost about 1% of steady(a large...

Speciation of tropical rainforest primates of Africa: insular biogeography

The climatic fluctuations that occurred throughout the Quaternary resulted repeatedly in the fragmentation of the rainforests of tropical Africa. This fragmentation would have facilitated allopatric speciation in each tropical rainforest refugium. The location and area of the tropical rainforest refugia that existed during the last glacial maximum have been estimated from the analysis of palaeo...

Biogeographical and Ecological Determinants of Land Snail Diversification on Islands

The equilibrium theory of island biogeography as originally proposed by R. MacArthur and E. O. Wilson relied on the ecological processes of colonization and extinction to determine the species diversity of islands. Although they were well aware of the potential contribution of speciation within-island to species diversity, MacArthur and Wilson’s equilibrium model was purely ecological and did n...
